Instant Lawn Midrand: Matching Grass and Preparation to Your Site

Good instant lawn Midrand work comes down to three decisions: the grass, the ground and the first three weeks of watering. We supply and install turf for homes, estates and businesses across Midrand. A typical job takes one to three days. This page explains how we make those decisions, so you can judge any quote you receive, ours included.

Instant lawn is mature grass that growers raise on a farm, then harvest, roll and deliver. It looks finished the day it goes down. Only when the roots knit into the soil beneath does it become a true lawn.

Start with how the site is used

We lay turf on gated estates, townhouse complexes, office parks and family gardens. Each wants something different from grass. A body corporate wants a lawn that survives landscapers, children and delivery vehicles. A homeowner may want a soft lawn for bare feet under a jacaranda.

So we ask about the site before we talk about grass. How many hours of direct sun does each area get? How much foot traffic will it carry? Do you have a dog? How much mowing will you tolerate? The answers usually point to one variety, or sometimes two.

Choosing grass for Midrand properties

Six varieties cover most instant grass Midrand requests: Kikuyu, All Season Grass, LM Berea, Tiffspot, Cynodon (Bermuda) and Buffalo. The prices below are published market figures per square metre, in line with LocalPros’ instant lawn pricing guide. They are not our quotation. They let you sense-check what you are offered. For All Season Grass and Tiffspot, ask us for a current price.

GrassBest suited toPublished market price per m²
KikuyuFull sun, large lawns, frequent foot traffic. Durable and fast-growing.Around R35 (some suppliers R32)
LM BereaShaded and semi-shaded gardens. Fine, soft texture.Around R90
Cynodon (Bermuda)Direct sun. Tolerates drought, salt and heavy use.R30 to R55
BuffaloA step up in price. Ask us whether it suits your site.Around R90

Across the industry, prices run from about R30 to R90 per square metre, depending on grass and location. The grass is only part of your final bill, though. Soil preparation, delivery and installation all add to it.

Where each grass earns its place

Kikuyu is a popular choice in Gauteng. It grows fast, copes with full sun and heavy traffic, and suits a family garden or a large open area. LawnKing explains why Kikuyu works so well as instant turf if you want a second source.

Shade is where people choose wrongly. Kikuyu does its best work in full sun, so it struggles under a mature tree. LM Berea tolerates limited light far better. If your garden has a sunny lawn and a shaded corner, we can lay two varieties rather than force one grass to cope with both.

Bermuda needs direct sun. In return, it handles drought, salt and heavy use, and it grows in a wide range of soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. For instant turf in Midrand gardens with poor soil or hard use, it deserves a look.

Instant lawn Midrand for commercial and estate sites

We supply to all kinds of businesses. If you want to buy instant lawn in Midrand for an office park, a retail site or an estate, the brief differs from a home garden. A commercial lawn has to look right on opening day and survive constant use afterwards. For any area people walk across, we lean toward the tougher varieties, such as Kikuyu and Bermuda.

Access is the other question. On a business site, the schedule depends on whether the premises must stay open while we work. Tell us early. We plan delivery and laying around trading hours, parking and tenant deliveries. Property managers should also ask about the keep-off period. A new lawn needs unnecessary foot traffic kept off it while it roots, so we agree how to barrier or sign the area before laying begins. You can read more about our commercial lawn installation service.

Midrand’s quick growth also keeps hedges busy. If the lawn is part of a wider tidy-up, we handle hedge trimming and garden clean-ups too. Our garden services save you coordinating a second contractor.

Soil preparation decides whether the lawn survives

Preparation is the part of the job you cannot see once the turf is down. It also decides whether the lawn roots well. Laying turf onto hard, dry or uneven ground leads to poor rooting, dry spots and uneven growth. Buried rubble does the same. Every Midrand lawn installation we do includes a check for debris before the turf goes near the ground.

The work follows a set order, and each stage protects the next:

  1. Clear existing vegetation and any rubble.
  2. Loosen the topsoil.
  3. Correct the levels and set a slight fall away from buildings for drainage.
  4. Improve the soil with compost where it needs it.
  5. Firm the surface so you can walk on it without leaving deep footprints.

The order matters for practical reasons. You cannot level properly until the old growth and debris are gone. You cannot judge the fall until the soil is loose. The final surface should be firm but not compacted. Compacted soil sheds water instead of holding it, so every litre you put on the lawn is wasted. Sandy loam is the ideal soil, because it drains well and compacts less. If your soil is not sandy loam, loosening and compost do the correcting.

Measuring and ordering without waste

Instant lawn is perishable. It is a living crop, so the ground must be ready when the truck arrives. That makes your measurements important. Order too little and you wait for a second delivery with a half-laid lawn. Order too much and you pay for turf you cannot use.

Measure the length and width of each section and multiply them to get square metres. For an irregular garden, divide it into smaller rectangles and add the totals. Allow a small amount extra for cutting and fitting around paving, taps and edges. We also measure on site before we confirm an order. The figure you send us is a starting point, not a risk.

The first three weeks after laying

Your lawn is green on day one, but the roots need time to grip. Watering mistakes cause much of the trouble in this window, and Gauteng has no water to waste.

Water thoroughly straight after laying. Keep the lawn consistently moist for the first two weeks. After that, water less often but more deeply. Deep watering pushes the roots down, and a deep-rooted lawn survives dry spells far better. Kikuyu may show strong establishment within 10 to 14 days and full establishment within about three weeks. Other varieties vary, so we give you specific guidance for the grass you choose.

Do the first mow once the turf has firmly rooted, typically two to three weeks after installation. Set the blades high. Cutting too low too soon is a common way to set a young lawn back. Until then, keep unnecessary foot traffic off it. Our lawn aftercare advice covers what comes after the first mow.

What to ask for in a quote

Quotes for the same lawn can differ widely, usually because one supplier leaves out a stage. When you compare lawn installers in Midrand, ask each one whether the price covers measuring, soil preparation, delivery, laying and the first watering. Ask who does the work and what aftercare advice comes with it. We sell per square metre. The final figure depends on the grass, the area, how much soil work the ground needs, and the delivery distance and access.

Our work carries a guarantee with clear terms, and we explain those terms to every client before installation. Ask any supplier the same question and compare the answers.
